Provost Message - April 20, 2017

Dear Members of the Villanova Community,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Teresa (Terri) M. Boyer, EdD, ’95 CLAS as the founding director of the Anne Welsh McNulty Institute for Women’s Leadership and as an associate professor of Education and Counseling, effective July 31. This appointment is the result of an extensive national search involving faculty, administrators, students and alumni.

The Anne Welsh McNulty Institute for Women’s Leadership was founded in 2017 to foster women’s advancement through education, advocacy, community-building and the collaborative creation of new knowledge. As the McNulty Institute’s inaugural director, Dr. Boyer will work to establish it as a premier, nationally recognized organization that advances women as leaders and creates innovative scholarship and programs for social change.

A prominent teacher-scholar, Dr. Boyer has taught extensively on working women in America, work-life balance, career planning and leadership development. As a researcher, she has secured substantial federal, state and private grant funds to support work on the issues of women’s advancement and gender equity. Dr. Boyer’s expertise in workforce development, gender parity and women’s advancement is highly sought-after by numerous advisory boards, foundations and government agencies. She is also an accomplished author who has published widely on the topics of economic and social equity for women.

Since 2008, Dr. Boyer has served as the executive director of the Center for Women and Work and as an assistant research professor at Rutgers University. During that time, she shaped the Center’s strategic vision and areas of expertise, including women’s education and career development, women’s leadership and advancement, working families, and women and STEM. She also worked collaboratively with internal groups, regional and national nonprofits, foundations, state and federal government agencies, industry partners and individual donors to promote the Center’s mission and work.

Dr. Boyer holds a doctorate in Education and a Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from Villanova, and received the Medallion of Excellence from the Department of Education and Counseling the year she graduated.

I would like to recognize and thank the members of the steering committee and the search committee who were involved in the interview process. They were instrumental in identifying the best candidate—from an incredibly strong applicant pool—to lead the McNulty Institute. Dr. Boyer’s background and expertise are perfectly aligned with the goals of the Institute and, as a Villanova alumna, she understands our Augustinian tradition and how social justice and the advancement of women intersect with race, ethnicity, class and religion, among other areas. These qualities make her an ideal fit for this role.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Boyer to our University community.

Warm regards,
